IACM Code of Conduct
1st April 2026
1. Introduction
The International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) is committed to the advancement in computational mechanics—a multidisciplinary field that integrates mechanics, mathematics, and computer science to model, simulate, and understand complex physical systems. While Computational Solid Mechanics (CSM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are at the core of the IACM activity, subjects such as Thermodynamics, Electro Magnetics, Rigid Body Mechanics, Control Systems and some aspects of Particle Physics fall naturally within the scope of the definition. Indeed the provision of a common forum for discussion, education and research information transfer between the diverse disciplines represented is the main “raison d’être” of IACM.
This Code of Conduct serves to promote responsible scientific behavior, ethical professional practices, and a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for all members and participants in IACM activities. Whether engaging online or in person, all individuals representing or participating in IACM are expected to adhere to these standards.
2. Ethical Principles
Academic Integrity
All IACM members must uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. This includes:
- Ensuring honesty and transparency in the presentation of data and research findings, in all public outlets (papers, presentations, etc.).
- Prohibiting any form of data falsification, fabrication, or manipulation.
- Avoiding citation manipulation or excessive self-citation.
- Processing manuscripts under review in an ethical manner, whether as a journal reviewer or editor. This includes maintaining confidentiality, processing reviews in a timely manner, respecting the origins of new ideas and contributions, and avoiding self-serving behaviors such as inappropriate reference suggestions.
- Refraining from redundant or duplicate publications.
- Respecting the intellectual property rights of others.
Conflicts of Interest
Any potential or actual conflicts of interest—particularly in relation to editorial work, conference organization, peer review, awards, and elections—must be disclosed clearly and promptly. All participants are expected to refer to relevant IACM policies and guidelines.
3. Professional Behavior
IACM promotes professionalism in all its activities. Members are expected to:
- Show respect toward fellow members, including staff, collaborators, and volunteers.
- Engage in constructive, thoughtful, and civil discourse—free from hostility, sarcasm, or disparagement.
- Represent research honestly and engage in fair, critical, and respectful discussions.
- Uphold fairness, equity, and impartiality in collaborative and professional interactions.
4. Inclusion and Diversity
The IACM is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
- Harassment, bullying, or discrimination based on race, gender, nationality, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristic will not be tolerated.
- Equal opportunity must be promoted for all members, particularly those from historically underrepresented or marginalized groups.
- Members are encouraged to actively support and promote diversity within their teams, events, and institutions.
5. Safe Environment
All IACM events and platforms—whether virtual, physical, or hybrid—must provide a safe and welcoming environment.
- Any form of verbal, physical, or psychological harassment is strictly prohibited.
- A formal mechanism shall be in place for confidential reporting of inappropriate behavior.
- Retaliation against individuals who report misconduct in good faith will not be tolerated. The identity and rights of whistleblowers will be protected.
6. Social Media and Online Interaction
Digital communication is an extension of professional conduct. Members must:
- Maintain professionalism in emails, forums, webinars, and all social media platforms.
- Avoid posting harmful, discriminatory, or offensive content.
- Use IACM branding and association affiliations responsibly, avoiding misrepresentation or reputational harm to the association.
7. Consequences of Violations
Violations of this Code of Conduct will be taken seriously and may result in:
- Verbal or written warnings.
- Temporary or permanent exclusion from IACM events
- Temporary or permanent exclusion from IACM activities (for instance as nominator or nominee for award, or exclusion (ineligibility) to the general assembly or Executive Council.
- Suspension or termination of IACM membership.
- Exclusion from the Executive Committee (for current EC members)
Reports may be brought directly to a member of the Executive Council, or the IACM Secretariat. All reports will be handled with due process, fairness, and confidentiality. Investigations will follow a consistent procedure. Since IACM is an international association, an ad hoc committee review will be put in place to take into account the cultural background of the person filling the complaint, as well as the background of the accused individual (if any). Accused individuals will have an opportunity to respond. Any sanctions will be applied at the end of this process.
Members of the IACM Executive Council (EC) are held to the highest standards of conduct, given their leadership roles and responsibilities within the association. As such, violations of the Code of Conduct by EC members may result in more serious consequences, including removal from leadership positions or exclusion from governance activities.
8. Review and Updates
This Code of Conduct is a living document and will be reviewed periodically to reflect evolving best practices and member feedback.
- IACM encourages all members to participate in discussions related to future revisions.
- Updates will be made transparently and shared broadly with the community.
By participating in IACM events and activities, members agree to abide by this Code of Conduct.
Together, we uphold the integrity of our field and foster a vibrant, respectful, and forward-thinking scientific community.
