We regret to inform you of the passing of Professor Ivo Babuška on April 12, 2023 at the age of 97.

Ivo made groundbreaking and sustained contributions in the fields of mathematics, applied mathematics, numerical methods and computational mechanics.  He is perhaps best known for the condition that bears his name, the Ladyzhenskaya–Babuška–Brezzi or LBB condition, that provides sufficient conditions for a stable mixed formulation.

Ivo was a regular participant in many IACM meetings and gatherings, and was an IACM Founding Member in 1981.  Professor Babuška published more than 350 refereed journal articles and 26 books, working with close to 150 co-authors, including his 40 Ph.D. students.  His career is decorated by a very long list of distinguished awards and honors from various societies.  These include, for example, the Birkhoff Prize (1994), the IACM Congress Medal (Gauss Newton, 2006), and the AMS Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2012).

There is no doubt that while Ivo will be sorely missed, his many works will continue to inspire computational mechanicians for generations to come.
